Norton 360 is one of the most searched-for antivirus products in the United States, and one of the most common questions we get before a purchase is simple: will it run on my computer or phone? Norton still supports a wider range of Windows versions than most competitors, but there are important exceptions, a few features that quietly disappear on older systems, and separate rules for Mac, Android and iPhone. This guide lays out the current Norton 360 system requirements for every platform, explains what changes between Standard, Deluxe, Premium and Norton 360 for Gamers, and shows you how to check your own device in under a minute.
Everything below is taken from Norton’s published device-security requirements page as of November 2026. Norton revises that page when a new operating system ships, so if you are reading this long after publication, use it as a reliable starting point and confirm on Norton’s support site before a large multi-device purchase.
Quick answer: Norton 360 minimum requirements in 2026
The device-security part of every Norton 360 plan (Standard, Deluxe, Premium, Deluxe with LifeLock Select and Norton 360 for Gamers) shares the same baseline:
- Windows: Windows 11 or Windows 10 (all editions except S mode), Windows 11 on ARM processors, Windows 8 and 8.1, and Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit) with Service Pack 1 and SHA2 support.
- Mac: Mac OS X 10.13 High Sierra or later, on Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3/i5/i7, Xeon or Apple silicon (M1 through M4) Macs.
- Android: Android 10 or later with the Google Play app installed. ColorOS 7.1 or later and ChromeOS 72 or later are also listed, again with Google Play.
- iPhone and iPad: iOS 17 or later.
- Hardware: a 1 GHz processor, 2 GB of RAM on Windows 11/10 (1 GB on 32-bit Windows 8/7, 2 GB on 64-bit), 2 GB of RAM on a Mac, 300 MB of free disk space on either, and 50 MB of free storage on Android.
- Browsers: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Edge on Windows; Safari, Firefox and Chrome on Mac.
- Internet connection: required to download the installer, activate the key and run LiveUpdate.
If your devices clear those bars, any current Norton 360 key from our shop will install. The sections below cover the exceptions, which are where most support tickets come from.
Windows requirements in detail
Windows 11 and Windows 10
Norton supports every edition of Windows 11 and Windows 10 except the locked-down S mode, which only allows apps from the Microsoft Store. If your laptop came with Windows in S mode you can switch out of it for free in Settings, Activation, and Norton will then install normally. Windows 11 on ARM laptops (Snapdragon X Plus and Elite, and earlier ARM chips) is supported too, with one caveat: Norton Family parental controls and Game Optimizer are not available on ARM devices.
Keep in mind that Microsoft ended free security updates for Windows 10 in October 2025. Norton still protects a Windows 10 PC, and that protection matters more on an unpatched system, but if you are buying a multi-year license for a Windows 10 machine, factor in that the operating system itself is no longer being patched unless it is enrolled in Extended Security Updates.
Windows 8, 8.1 and 7
This is where Norton stands out. McAfee, Malwarebytes and most other consumer products have dropped Windows 7 and 8 entirely, while Norton still lists Windows 8/8.1 (all versions) and Windows 7 with Service Pack 1. There are two conditions. First, the Windows 7 installation needs SHA2 code-signing support, which arrived through Windows Update in 2019; a Windows 7 PC that has been offline since before then will need those updates first. Second, some protection features do not work inside the Windows 8 Start-screen browsers, so use the desktop version of your browser on those machines.
If you have an older family PC that cannot move to Windows 10 or 11, a Norton 360 key is one of the few mainstream options that will still install on it. That is often the deciding factor for customers choosing between Norton and McAfee, whose current requirements start at Windows 10 64-bit.
Processor, RAM and disk space
The published minimums are modest: a 1 GHz processor, 2 GB of RAM on Windows 10 and 11, 1 GB on 32-bit Windows 7 or 8 and 2 GB on their 64-bit editions, plus 300 MB of free disk space. The Norton Bootable Recovery Tool needs at least 512 MB of RAM. Those are minimums; 4 GB of RAM and an SSD make full scans noticeably faster.
Mac requirements
Norton 360 for Mac requires Mac OS X 10.13 High Sierra or later, which covers Macs going back to roughly 2010 as long as they received the High Sierra update. Both Intel Macs (Core 2 Duo, Core i3, i5, i7 and Xeon) and Apple-silicon Macs from the M1 through the M4 generation are supported. You need 2 GB of RAM and 300 MB of free disk space, and an internet connection for LiveUpdate.
Three Norton features are Windows-only and are not available on a Mac at all: Norton Family parental controls, Norton AntiSpam and Cloud Backup. If cloud backup is the reason you are choosing Deluxe or Premium, make sure the device you want backed up is a Windows PC. Safari, Chrome and Firefox are all supported for the browser protection components on macOS.
Android, iPhone, iPad and Chromebook
Norton 360 for Android needs Android 10 or later and the Google Play app. That second condition matters: phones and tablets without Google Play services cannot install it, and Norton specifically lists Amazon Kindle and Fire devices and Huawei devices as unsupported. Android’s multi-user mode is also unsupported, so install Norton under the device’s primary user. The app needs about 50 MB of storage.
On Apple devices, Norton requires iOS 17 or later on iPhone and iPad. That rules out the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X, which stopped at iOS 16, but covers the iPhone XR, XS and everything newer. Open Settings, General, About and read the iOS Version line to confirm.
Chromebooks are covered through the Android app on ChromeOS 72 or later, again with Google Play available. A Chromebook that has passed its Auto Update Expiration date and is stuck on an old build may not be able to install it.
Which Norton 360 plan fits your devices?
The system requirements are identical across the Norton 360 range; what changes is the device count and the extras:
- Norton 360 Standard, 1 year, 1 device covers a single PC, Mac, phone or tablet and includes Secure VPN and a password manager.
- Norton 360 Deluxe, 1 year, 3 devices and Norton 360 Deluxe, 1 year, 5 devices add more devices, more cloud backup (Windows only) and parental controls (Windows and Android).
- Norton 360 Premium, 1 year, 10 devices is built for households with many devices.
- Norton 360 for Gamers, 1 year, 3 devices adds Game Optimizer and notification silencing on Windows PCs (not on Windows ARM devices).
Not sure whether three or five devices is the right size? Our guide to choosing between a 1, 3 or 5 device antivirus license walks through how to count phones, tablets and laptops in a typical household.
How to check your own device in 60 seconds
Windows
Press the Windows key, type winver and press Enter to see your edition and version. Then open Settings, System, About and read “System type” (32-bit, 64-bit or ARM-based), “Installed RAM” and, under Storage, the free space on your C: drive.
Mac
Apple menu, About This Mac. The first line shows the macOS name and version. 10.13 or higher is supported.
Android
Settings, About phone, Android version. If it shows 9 or lower, check Settings, System, System update for an upgrade to Android 10 or later.
iPhone or iPad
Settings, General, About, iOS Version. If it is 16 or lower and an update is offered under Settings, General, Software Update, install it before activating Norton.
Installation problems that look like license problems
Most “my Norton key does not work” emails we receive turn out to be environment issues rather than key issues:
- Installer refuses to start on Windows 7. The PC is usually missing the 2019 SHA2 update. Run Windows Update until no more updates are offered, then retry.
- Installer stalls or reports a conflict. Another antivirus is still installed. Norton will not run alongside a second real-time scanner, so remove the old antivirus completely with that vendor’s removal tool first.
- Protection shows as “at risk” after activation. Restart the computer and let LiveUpdate finish; the status normally clears within a few minutes.
- “System Extension Blocked” on a Mac. Normal on macOS. Open System Settings, Privacy & Security, allow the Norton extension and grant Full Disk Access when prompted.
- Key reports as already used. Norton keys are attached to the Norton account that first redeems them. When you move to a new computer, sign in to that same account instead of re-entering the key. Our step-by-step guide to activating an antivirus license key covers the Norton flow.
