Two McAfee boxes, two prices, and the same red logo on both. If you are standing between McAfee Internet Security and McAfee Total Protection, this guide explains what each plan actually does, where the extra money goes, and which one makes sense for a US household or a small office in 2026. It also covers the one mistake that costs buyers the most: picking a key for the wrong region.
The short answer
Both products use the same McAfee scanning engine, the same real-time protection, the same firewall and the same web protection. Neither one is “weaker” at stopping viruses and ransomware. The difference is the set of extras bundled on top:
- Internet Security is the core package: antivirus and anti-malware, a two-way firewall, web and download protection, a password manager and secure browsing for PC, Mac, Android and iOS.
- Total Protection starts from the same core and adds the privacy and identity layer McAfee markets as its full suite: Secure VPN (data allowances depend on your account and auto-renewal settings), identity monitoring for your email addresses, a file shredder, encrypted file storage on Windows and McAfee’s Protection Score dashboard.
If you mainly want a reliable, low-cost guard for a few laptops and phones, Internet Security covers that. If you also want the VPN and identity monitoring under the same subscription, Total Protection is the plan built for it.

What they cost at AntivirusPoint today
Prices below are our current store prices in US dollars for genuine, unused retail keys. They can change, so the product page always wins.
- McAfee Internet Security, 1 year, 1 device: $14.95
- McAfee Internet Security, 1 year, 3 devices: $17.95
- McAfee Internet Security, 1 year, 5 devices: $19.95
- McAfee Internet Security, 1 year, 10 devices: $24.95
- McAfee Total Protection, 1 year, 1 device (Europe/UK key): $59.99
- McAfee Total Protection, 1 year, 5 devices (Europe/UK key): $89.99
- McAfee Total Protection, 1 year, 10 devices (Europe/UK key): $99.99
Notice the gap. For the same device count, Internet Security is usually the cheapest way to get McAfee’s core protection, and the 10-device key works out to under $2.50 per device for the year. Total Protection costs more because you are also paying for the VPN, identity monitoring and the extra privacy tools. If you would never open those, the money is better spent elsewhere.
Before you buy: the region on the key matters
McAfee retail keys are tied to a sales region. A key sold for Europe/UK redeems on a McAfee account whose billing country is in that region; a key sold for the US and Canada redeems on a US or Canadian account. This is the single most common reason a genuine key is refused at activation, and it has nothing to do with the key being fake. Our product titles state the region clearly, for example “Europe/UK” or “USA/Canada”. Match it to the country on your McAfee account, not to where you happen to be travelling. If you are unsure which region your account uses, log in at home.mcafee.com and check the country shown in your account settings before you order.
Who should pick Internet Security
- Families with a mix of old and new devices. You get Windows, Mac, Android and iOS coverage under one key, and the 5- and 10-device sizes are inexpensive.
- Anyone who already pays for a VPN or a password vault. You would be paying twice for the same thing with Total Protection.
- Small offices that just need endpoint protection. Core antivirus, firewall and web filtering on each machine, nothing you have to configure.
- Older PCs. Fewer background services means a lighter footprint. Check the McAfee system requirements for 2026 if your machine still runs Windows 8.1 or an early build of Windows 10.
Who should pick Total Protection
- You work on public Wi-Fi often. The bundled Secure VPN encrypts traffic in cafes, airports and hotels without a separate subscription.
- You want to know when your email address shows up in a breach. Identity monitoring watches the addresses you register and alerts you so you can change passwords early.
- You handle sensitive documents on Windows. The file shredder removes deleted files properly and the encrypted vault keeps tax returns, scans of IDs and contracts out of reach if the laptop is lost.
- You prefer one dashboard. Protection Score turns the scattered settings into a single number with a to-do list, which is useful if you are setting up devices for relatives.
Three things people get wrong
1. “Total Protection catches more viruses”
It does not. The detection engine, cloud lookups and ransomware rollback are identical across McAfee’s consumer line, including the entry-level McAfee AntiVirus for one PC. You pay for extras, not for better detection.
2. “A 3-device key only works on three Windows PCs”
A device is any supported Windows PC, Mac, Android phone or tablet, iPhone or iPad. Three devices can be one laptop, one phone and one tablet. Our guide to choosing the right license size walks through how to count them.
3. “Cheap keys are always grey market”
Prices on retail keys vary a lot by region and by how long the box has been on a distributor’s shelf. The test of a genuine key is simple: it redeems on McAfee’s own website, it shows the correct product and term inside your McAfee account, and the seller gives you a written refund promise if it fails to activate. Our checklist on how to spot a genuine antivirus license key covers the rest.
How activation works for both products
- Order on AntivirusPoint. The key arrives by email, usually within minutes; there is nothing to ship.
- Go to McAfee’s official activation page (the link is in our delivery email) and sign in or create a McAfee account in the region that matches the key.
- Enter the 25-character key. Your account shows the product name, the device count and the expiry date.
- Download the installer from inside your account and sign in on each device. Mobile devices install the McAfee Security app from the App Store or Google Play and sign in with the same account.
If the key is refused, do not buy another one. Check the region first, then contact us with your order number; a key that does not activate is covered by our refund policy.
Our recommendation
For most US households, McAfee Internet Security on the 5- or 10-device plan gives the full McAfee engine for every device in the house at the lowest price per seat. Move up to Total Protection only when you will genuinely use the VPN or the identity monitoring, and in that case buy the key for your account’s region. Either way, keep a copy of the delivery email: the key, the order number and the activation link are all you need if you ever reinstall.
Frequently asked questions
Is McAfee Internet Security still sold in 2026?
Yes. McAfee now promotes its McAfee+ plans online, but Internet Security and Total Protection remain available as retail license keys, and the keys redeem on McAfee’s current software.
Can I upgrade from Internet Security to Total Protection later?
Yes. Inside your McAfee account you can add a Total Protection key when the current term ends, or McAfee will offer an upgrade. You do not need to uninstall anything; the extra features switch on after the new key is applied.
Does Total Protection include unlimited VPN data?
McAfee ties the VPN data allowance to your account settings, and on many plans unlimited data requires auto-renewal to be switched on. Check the VPN section of your McAfee account after activation for the allowance that applies to you.
Do the keys work on Mac and iPhone?
Both products cover Windows, Mac, Android and iOS. A few features, such as the firewall and the encrypted vault, are Windows-only, which is normal across the industry.
What if my key says it is for the wrong region?
Do not try to force it. Contact us with your order number and the message you saw. We will check the key against the product you ordered and either exchange it for the correct region or refund it under our policy.
How many devices can one key protect?
Whatever the product title says: 1, 3, 5 or 10. Devices can be any mix of supported PCs, Macs, phones and tablets.
