Before you buy a McAfee license key, it is worth spending two minutes checking that
the computer or phone you plan to protect can actually run the software. McAfee
dropped support for several older operating systems over the last few years, and
the most common reason a brand-new key “does not work” is simply that the device
is running a Windows or macOS version McAfee no longer installs on. This guide lays
out the current McAfee system requirements for Windows, Mac, Android, iPhone and
iPad, and Chromebook, explains the differences between McAfee Internet Security,
Total Protection, McAfee+, AntiVirus and LiveSafe, and shows you how to check your
own device in under a minute.

Everything below is based on McAfee’s published consumer system-requirements page
as of November 2026. McAfee updates that page when a new operating system ships,
so if you are reading this much later, treat it as a strong starting point and confirm
against McAfee’s site before a large multi-device purchase.

## Quick answer: the minimum McAfee system requirements in 2026

For the core consumer products (McAfee+, Total Protection, LiveSafe, Internet Security,
AntiVirus Plus and Multi Access) the baseline is the same:

 * **Windows:** Windows 11, or Windows 10 (version RS5, the October 2018 update,
or newer) on a 64-bit (x64) processor. ARM64 laptops (Snapdragon and similar)
   need Windows 11.
 * **Mac:** macOS 13 Ventura or later, with McAfee app build 4.23 or higher.
 * **Android:** Android 10 or higher on phones and tablets.
 * **iPhone and iPad:** iOS 16 / iPadOS 16 or later.
 * **Chromebook:** ChromeOS 102.0.5005 or higher.
 * **Hardware (Windows PCs):** 1 GHz processor, 2 GB of RAM and 1.3 GB of free disk
   space.
 * **Browsers for WebAdvisor and the browser extensions:** Google Chrome, Microsoft
Edge (Chromium), Mozilla Firefox and, on Mac and iOS, Safari.
 * **Internet connection:** required to download the installer, activate the key
   and receive updates.

If your device clears those bars, any current McAfee consumer license will install.
The sections below explain the exceptions and the gray areas.

## Windows requirements in detail

### Windows 11 and Windows 10

McAfee supports Windows 11 and Windows 10 from the RS5 build onward. RS5 is Windows
10 version 1809, released in late 2018. Almost every Windows 10 PC that has installed
updates in the last few years is on version 21H2 or 22H2, which is far newer than
1809, so in practice any Windows 10 machine that still receives Microsoft updates
is fine.

Note that Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows 10 in October 2025. McAfee
still lists Windows 10 as supported today, but if you are buying a multi-year license
for a Windows 10 PC, remember that the operating system itself is no longer getting
security patches unless it is enrolled in Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates
program. Antivirus software reduces risk on an unpatched system but does not replace
OS updates.

### 32-bit Windows and ARM laptops

McAfee’s current installer is 64-bit only. A 32-bit (x86) installation of Windows
10 will not run it. You can check which you have by opening Settings, then System,
then About and reading the “System type” line. Windows-on-ARM devices are supported,
but only on Windows 11.

### Windows 7, 8 and 8.1

None of McAfee’s main security products list Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 anymore. The only
McAfee tools that still mention Windows 8.1 are PC Optimizer and the TechCheck/TechMate
remote-support utilities, and those are not antivirus products. If you have an older
PC you cannot upgrade, a McAfee key will not help it; you would need to look at
a different vendor that still supports that OS, or upgrade the machine.

### RAM and disk space

The 2 GB RAM and 1.3 GB disk figures are minimums for the security suite to install
and run. McAfee lists 4 GB of RAM for the Virus Removal Service and for the Virus
Protection Pledge on Windows 10 and 11. Realistically, a PC with 4 GB or more will
give you a far smoother experience during full scans than one at the 2 GB floor.

## Mac requirements

McAfee for Mac requires macOS 13 Ventura or newer. That covers Ventura, Sonoma,
Sequoia and anything released after them. Macs stuck on Monterey (12) or Big Sur(
11) cannot install the current McAfee app. To check your version, click the Apple
menu in the top-left corner and choose About This Mac.

Both Intel and Apple-silicon (M1 through the current M-series) Macs are supported
as long as the macOS version is recent enough. One detail that catches people out:
McAfee Internet Security’s requirements page does not list Safari among its supported
browsers, while Total Protection, McAfee+ and LiveSafe do. If Safari browser protection
matters to you on a Mac, choose one of those three rather than Internet Security.

## Android, iPhone, iPad and Chromebook

McAfee Mobile Security for Android needs Android 10 or later. Most phones sold since
2019 shipped with Android 10 or can update to it. On Apple devices you need iOS
16 or iPadOS 16, which rules out the iPhone 7 and older and the original iPad Air
generation, but supports the iPhone 8 and everything after it.

Chromebooks are covered through the Android app, which is why the requirement is
expressed as a ChromeOS version (102.0.5005 or higher) rather than hardware. Chromebooks
that have reached their Auto Update Expiration date and are stuck on an older ChromeOS
build will not be able to install it.

## Which McAfee product is right for your devices?

The requirements are nearly identical across the range, so the choice comes down
to platforms and features:

 * **McAfee AntiVirus** is Windows-only. It will not install on a Mac, phone or
Chromebook. Buy it only for a single Windows PC.
 * **McAfee AntiVirus Plus** adds Mac and mobile support, with the standard browser
   list (Chrome, Edge, Firefox).
 * **McAfee Internet Security** covers Windows, Mac, Android and iOS, but Safari
is not on its supported-browser list.
 * **McAfee Total Protection and McAfee+** cover every platform above, include Safari
support, and add identity monitoring, VPN and password manager features depending
   on the tier.
 * **McAfee LiveSafe** is functionally similar to Total Protection for an unlimited
number of devices and carries the same requirements.

Because the device count is the other half of the buying decision, you may also

## How to check your own device in 60 seconds

### Windows

Press the Windows key, type _winver_ and press Enter. The window shows your Windows
edition and version. Then open Settings, System, About and read “System type” (it
should say 64-bit or ARM-based), “Installed RAM” and, under Storage, the free space
on your C: drive.

### Mac

Apple menu, About This Mac. The macOS name and version number are on the first line.
Anything 13.0 or higher is supported.

### Android

Settings, About phone, Android version. If it shows 9 or lower, check Settings,
System, System update to see whether an upgrade to Android 10 or later is available.

### iPhone or iPad

Settings, General, About, then read “iOS Version” or “iPadOS Version”. If it is
below 16 and an update is offered under Settings, General, Software Update, install
it first.

## Common installation problems that look like license problems

Our support inbox sees the same handful of issues every week, and most of them are
environment problems rather than key problems:

 * **“This app can’t run on your PC.”** Almost always a 32-bit Windows installation
or a Windows version older than 10 RS5.
 * **Installer stalls at 0% or 99%.** Usually a competing antivirus is still installed.
McAfee refuses to install alongside another real-time scanner, so [remove the old antivirus completely](https://infinitysolutions.digital/remove-old-antivirus-completely/)
with the vendor’s cleanup tool first.
 * **Key accepted but protection shows “at risk”.** Often the machine has not rebooted
after install, or Windows Security is still set as the active provider. A restart
fixes the first; the second resolves once McAfee registers itself.
 * **Mac shows “System Extension Blocked”.** Expected on macOS. Open System Settings,
Privacy & Security, and allow the McAfee extension, then grant Full Disk Access
   when prompted.
 * **Key already used.** Retail keys are tied to the McAfee account that first redeems
them. If you are moving to a new computer, sign in to the same McAfee account
rather than re-entering the key. Our walkthrough on [activating an antivirus license key](https://infinitysolutions.digital/how-to-activate-antivirus-license-key/)
covers the exact steps for McAfee.

## Does a stronger PC make McAfee faster?

Within reason, yes. Real-time scanning is light, but full scans read every file
on the drive, so an SSD and 8 GB of RAM make a visible difference compared with
a 2 GB machine on a spinning hard disk. If your PC is near the minimum, schedule
full scans for a time you are not using the computer and leave the default quick-
scan cadence alone. You can also compare the built-in option in our article on [whether Windows Defender is enough](https://infinitysolutions.digital/is-windows-defender-enough/),
which looks at performance impact as well as detection.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does McAfee still work on Windows 10?

Yes. McAfee supports Windows 10 version 1809 (RS5) and newer on 64-bit processors.
Keep in mind that Windows 10 itself stopped receiving free security updates from
Microsoft in October 2025.

### Can I install McAfee on a 32-bit computer?

No. The current McAfee consumer products require a 64-bit (x64) version of Windows,
or Windows 11 on ARM64 devices.

### What macOS version does McAfee need?

macOS 13 Ventura or later. Macs on Monterey or older cannot install the current
McAfee app.

### Which McAfee product supports Safari?

McAfee Total Protection, McAfee+ and LiveSafe list Safari (Mac and iOS) among supported
browsers. McAfee Internet Security and AntiVirus Plus do not list Safari.

### How much RAM and disk space does McAfee need?

The minimum is 2 GB of RAM and 1.3 GB of free disk space with a 1 GHz processor.
McAfee recommends 4 GB of RAM for its Virus Removal Service, and more memory makes
full scans noticeably faster.

### Will McAfee run on my Chromebook?

Yes, through the Android app, as long as the Chromebook is on ChromeOS 102.0.5005
or higher and still receives updates.
