Antivirus pricing looks simple until you reach the checkout page. Norton 360 comes
in Standard, Deluxe and Premium. McAfee sells 1, 3, 5 and 10 devices. Malwarebytes
and Watchdog ask whether you want 1 year, 2 years or 3 years. Pick too small and
you end up buying a second license in March. Pick too big and you pay for seats
nobody uses. This guide walks through how license sizes actually work in the United
States, how to count your devices properly, and when a longer term is a bargain
versus a trap.

## What “device count” really means on an antivirus license

A device (sometimes called a seat, PC or installation) is one computer, phone or
tablet that is signed in to your antivirus account at the same time. A 3-device
Norton 360 Deluxe key protects any three devices you choose: for example a Windows
laptop, an iPhone and a MacBook. If you buy a new laptop later, you can remove the
old one from your account and move the seat over. We explain that process in [how to move your antivirus subscription to a new computer](https://infinitysolutions.digital/move-antivirus-subscription-to-new-computer/).

Three details trip people up:

 * **Phones count.** With Norton, McAfee and Malwarebytes, an Android phone or iPhone
uses a full seat, exactly like a desktop PC.
 * **Dual-boot and virtual machines count separately.** A Windows VM running on
a Mac is a second device.
 * **Watchdog counts PCs only.** Watchdog Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware keys are sold
per Windows PC (1, 3, 5 or 10), so a household with phones needs a separate mobile
   product.

## Step 1: count every device you actually use

Write them down before you shop. A typical US household in 2026 looks like this:

 * Two laptops (work-from-home plus a personal machine)
 * One desktop or gaming PC
 * Two to four smartphones
 * One or two tablets

That is six to nine devices, which surprises most people who walk in planning to
buy a “1 PC” key. Only count devices that connect to the internet and store personal
data. A smart TV, a printer or a game console cannot run these antivirus suites
and should not be in the tally.

### Which devices can skip paid antivirus?

iPhones and iPads do not run traditional file scanners because iOS does not allow
it; the “iOS” app from Norton or McAfee adds web protection, Wi-Fi checking and
breach alerts instead. If an iPad is only used for streaming on home Wi-Fi, it is
a reasonable one to leave out. Windows PCs, Macs and Android phones should all be
covered. If you are unsure whether a Mac needs a seat, read [do Macs need antivirus in 2026](https://infinitysolutions.digital/do-macs-need-antivirus/).

## Step 2: match the count to a license tier

Vendors price tiers so that the middle option is the best value per device. Here
is how the common US tiers line up with real households.

### 1 device

Right for a single-PC user, a student with one laptop, or someone adding protection
to one older machine. Norton 360 Standard, McAfee Total Protection 1-Device, Malwarebytes
Premium 1-Device and Watchdog 1-PC all fit here. Do not buy a 1-device key for a
household and plan to “share it”; the second install signs the first one out.

### 3 devices

The sweet spot for one person with a laptop, a phone and a tablet, or a couple with
two laptops and one shared phone seat. Norton 360 Deluxe 3-Device and Malwarebytes
Premium 3-Device are the most popular keys we sell for this reason. Per device,
a 3-seat key usually costs 40 to 55 percent less than three separate 1-device keys.

### 5 devices

Fits most families of three or four. Norton 360 Deluxe 5-Device (USA/Canada edition),
McAfee Total Protection 5-Device and Malwarebytes Premium 5-Device cover two laptops,
one desktop and two phones with no juggling.

### 10 devices

Large families, small home offices and anyone who also protects parents’ or grandparents’
computers. Norton 360 Premium 10-Device, McAfee Internet Security 10-Device and
Malwarebytes Premium 10-Device are the usual choices. At this size, compare the
per-seat price against buying two 5-device keys; sometimes the two smaller keys
are cheaper during sales, and they also give you two separate accounts, which is
handy when you manage relatives’ devices.

## Step 3: decide the term — 1, 2 or 3 years

Term length is where most of the overpaying happens, in both directions.

### When a 1-year key is smarter

 * You might switch brands. If Microsoft Defender plus Malwarebytes turns out to
be enough for you (see [is Windows Defender enough in 2026](https://infinitysolutions.digital/is-windows-defender-enough/)),
you do not want two paid years left on a suite you no longer use.
 * Your device count is about to change: a new baby, a teenager getting a first
phone, or a laptop being retired.
 * You want the flexibility to catch next year’s promotional key prices.

### When a 2- or 3-year key saves real money

 * Your household is stable and you know you will keep the same brand.
 * You are buying for a parent or a small office where you do not want an annual
   renewal conversation.
 * The multi-year key is priced below two or three single years. Watchdog Anti-Malware
3-Year and McAfee Internet Security 3-Year keys regularly meet this test.

### The auto-renewal trap, in one paragraph

The first year you buy from the vendor’s website is usually discounted; the renewal
the following year is charged at the full list price, often double. A multi-year
key bought outright locks in today’s price and gives you no renewal surprise. If
you already have auto-renewal switched on, our guide to [stopping antivirus auto-renewal](https://infinitysolutions.digital/antivirus-auto-renewal-stop-paying-full-price/)
shows how to turn it off for Norton, McAfee and Malwarebytes and renew with a key
instead.

## Do not pay for seats you will not use

A quick sanity check before you buy: divide the price by the number of devices you
will _actually install on this month_, not the number on the box. A $60 five-device
key that protects two computers costs $30 per protected device. A $35 three-device
key that protects all three costs under $12 per device. Buying for “someday” devices
is how people end up with 10-seat licenses protecting four machines.

The exception is price-per-seat cliffs. If the 5-device key is only a few dollars
more than the 3-device key and you have four devices, take the five. Two spare seats
are cheap insurance for the next phone upgrade.

## Stacking, extending and upgrading later

Three things you can do after you buy, and one you cannot:

 * **You can extend.** Entering a second key of the same product before the first
expires usually adds the time to your existing subscription (Norton and McAfee
both support this). Some vendors require the same device count; a 3-device key
will not extend a 5-device plan.
 * **You can usually upgrade the tier.** Norton Standard to Deluxe, or Malwarebytes
1 to 3 devices, is normally a pro-rated change inside your account, or you simply
let the smaller plan run out and activate the larger key.
 * **You can move seats.** Remove an old laptop in the account dashboard and the
   seat is free immediately.
 * **You cannot split one key across two accounts.** A 5-device license belongs
to one email address. For two separate households, buy two keys.

Whatever you buy, activate it the right way; our [step-by-step activation guide](https://infinitysolutions.digital/how-to-activate-antivirus-license-key/)
covers Norton, McAfee, Bitdefender, Avast and Kaspersky and the “key already used”
and wrong-region errors.

## Region matters more than most buyers expect

Norton and McAfee sell region-locked keys. A key labeled UK/Europe activates in
a US account only sometimes, and when it does, the renewal and support are routed
to the wrong region. Every product on AntivirusPoint lists its region in the title,
for example “Norton 360 Deluxe 1 Year 5 Device USA/Canada”. If you live in the United
States or Canada, buy the USA/Canada edition. Watchdog and Malwarebytes keys are
global.

## Quick picks by household (US, 2026)

 * **One laptop, nothing else:** Malwarebytes Premium 1-Device or Watchdog Anti-
   Virus 1-PC, 1 year.
 * **Laptop + phone + tablet:** Norton 360 Deluxe 3-Device USA/Canada, 1 year; move
to 2 years once you know you like it.
 * **Family of four:** Norton 360 Deluxe 5-Device or McAfee Total Protection 5-Device,
   1 year.
 * **Family plus grandparents’ PCs:** Norton 360 Premium 10-Device, or two 5-device
   keys on separate accounts.
 * **Windows-only home office, set and forget:** Watchdog Anti-Malware 3-Year 3-
   PC or 5-PC.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does a 1-device antivirus license work on a PC and a phone?

No. One device means one installation at a time. Installing on a phone signs the
PC out, or the activation is refused. You need at least a 3-device key to cover
a computer and a phone together.

### Can I use a 5-device license for my family in different houses?

Yes, as long as everyone signs in with the same vendor account, because the license
is tied to one account, not one address. If each household wants its own login,
buy separate keys.

### Is a 2-year or 3-year antivirus key cheaper than renewing every year?

Usually yes when bought as a key. Vendor auto-renewal typically charges full list
price from the second year, while a multi-year key locks in the price paid today.
Compare the per-year cost before you buy.

### What happens to unused seats when the license expires?

They expire with the subscription; unused seats never roll over. That is why counting
your real devices before you buy matters.

### Can I add more devices to my existing antivirus plan later?

Yes. Upgrade inside your account for a pro-rated price, or buy a larger key and
activate it when the current one ends. Spare seats also cover a replacement phone
or laptop without a new purchase.
