If your antivirus bill jumped this year, you are not alone. Most security suites
sold in the United States are set to auto-renew by default, and the renewal price
is usually the full list price, not the discounted price you paid in year one. This
guide explains how auto-renewal works, how to turn it off for Norton 360, McAfee,
Malwarebytes and Watchdog, and how to keep your protection running by renewing with
a genuine license key instead. It is written for home users and small businesses
in the US, and every step can be done in a few minutes.

## Why antivirus auto-renewal costs more than you expect

Almost every major vendor sells the first year at an introductory price. When the
subscription renews, the vendor charges the regular price, which is often two to
three times higher. The charge goes to the card stored in your account, and the
renewal email can arrive weeks before the date, so it is easy to miss. Some vendors
also upgrade you to a bigger plan at renewal, for example from a single-device plan
to a multi-device plan, if that plan was the “recommended” option when you first
signed up. Before you renew, check that the device count still fits your household:
our guide to [choosing between a 1, 3 or 5 device antivirus license](https://infinitysolutions.digital/how-many-devices-antivirus-license/)
shows how to count what you really need.

None of this is hidden. The renewal terms are in the checkout page and in the confirmation
email. The problem is that the information is easy to forget twelve months later.
The fix is simple: know your renewal date, decide before that date whether you want
to renew, and choose the cheapest legitimate way to do it.

## Step 1: Find your renewal date and current price

Sign in to your vendor account on the web, not in the app on your PC. The account
page shows the plan name, the number of devices covered, the renewal date and the
renewal price. Write these three things down. If you cannot find the renewal price,
search your email for the original order confirmation; the renewal price is usually
printed near the bottom.

 * **Norton 360:** my.norton.com, then “My Subscriptions”. The renewal date and
   price appear under each product.
 * **McAfee:** home.mcafee.com, then “My Account” and “Subscriptions”. Auto-renewal
status is shown as a toggle.
 * **Malwarebytes:** my.malwarebytes.com, then “Subscriptions”. Each license shows
   its renewal date.
 * **Watchdog:** the Watchdog dashboard shows the license expiry date on the main
   screen.

## Step 2: Turn off auto-renewal (and keep your protection)

Turning off auto-renewal does not cancel your protection. Your software keeps working
until the current term ends. You simply stop the automatic charge. After you turn
it off, the vendor may show a warning about losing “automatic protection” or a renewal
discount; that is marketing, not a technical change. You can renew manually at any
time, with a key or with a card.

### Norton 360

In my.norton.com open “My Subscriptions”, find the product and switch “Automatic
Renewal” off. Norton asks you to confirm and may offer a discount to keep it on.
If you prefer to keep the discount, that is fine too, but note the new price and
the date it applies. If you turned it off and Norton still charged you, US customers
can request a refund within 60 days of the charge under Norton’s annual subscription
refund policy; contact Norton support with the order number.

### McAfee

In home.mcafee.com go to “My Account”, choose “Auto-Renewal Settings” and turn the
toggle off for each subscription. McAfee sends an email confirmation; keep it. McAfee
also offers a refund window for auto-renewal charges in the US, typically 60 days
from the renewal date, so if you missed the date you can still ask.

### Malwarebytes

In my.malwarebytes.com open “Subscriptions”, select the subscription and choose “
Manage subscription”, then turn off auto-renew. Malwarebytes shows the exact day
the license will stop if you do nothing, which makes planning easy.

### Watchdog Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware

Watchdog licenses bought as keys do not auto-renew at all. When the key expires,
the software tells you and you enter a new key. That is one reason many people switch
to key-based renewals: you only pay when you decide to.

## Step 3: Renew with a license key instead of the card on file

A license key is a code that adds a new term, usually one, two or three years, to
your existing account. The vendor treats it exactly like a renewal: your settings,
backups and devices stay as they are, and the new term is added to your current
expiry date, not started from today. Buying the key from a reseller is often cheaper
than the vendor’s renewal price because resellers compete on the key, while the
vendor’s website is built around the stored-card renewal.

Before you buy, make sure the key is genuine and matches your region and plan. The
product name must match (for example Norton 360 Standard, not Norton AntiVirus Plus),
the device count must be the same or higher, and the region must be correct: a UK/
Europe key will not activate on a US account, and the reverse is also true. We explain
the exact checks in [How to Spot a Genuine Antivirus License Key](https://infinitysolutions.digital/how-to-spot-genuine-antivirus-license-key/).

### How to redeem a renewal key

 1. Sign in to the vendor account that already holds your subscription.
 2. Find “Enter a product key”, “Redeem”, “Activate” or “Add a subscription” on the
    account page.
 3. Paste the key exactly as delivered, including the hyphens.
 4. Confirm the new expiry date on the account page. It should be your old date plus
    the length of the key.
 5. Open the app on your PC or phone and click “Check subscription” or sign out and
in again so the app picks up the new date.

If you are moving the subscription to a different computer at the same time, follow
[our guide to moving an antivirus subscription to a new computer](https://infinitysolutions.digital/move-antivirus-subscription-to-new-computer/)
first, then redeem the key on the new machine. If you have lost your key or cannot
find your account, our [lost license page](https://infinitysolutions.digital/lost-license/)
explains how to recover it.

## Step 4: Stack the savings legally

There are three ways to cut the cost further without breaking any license terms.

 * **Buy a longer term.** Two-year and three-year keys usually cost less per year
than one-year keys, and they remove two renewal events from your calendar. Watchdog
and McAfee both sell multi-year keys.
 * **Buy the right device count.** If you protect one laptop, do not pay for five
devices. If you protect a family, one five-device key is cheaper than five single-
   device keys.
 * **Renew before expiry, not after.** Keys stack on top of the remaining days,
so you lose nothing by renewing early when you find a good price. Renewing after
expiry can trigger the vendor’s full-price “reactivation” flow.

What not to do: never buy “lifetime” antivirus keys, “cracked” versions or keys
sold far below any plausible wholesale price. These are usually stolen, region-mismatched
or already used, and vendors deactivate them in bulk. A blocked key leaves you unprotected
and without a refund.

## Step 5: Set a reminder so this never happens again

Add two calendar reminders: one 30 days before expiry and one 7 days before. The
first reminder gives you time to compare prices and buy a key; the second is your
safety net. If you manage several PCs for a small business, keep a simple spreadsheet
with the device name, product, expiry date and where the key came from. It takes
five minutes and saves a surprise charge every year.

[McAfee keys](https://infinitysolutions.digital/brand/mcafee/) and [Windows security keys](https://infinitysolutions.digital/product-category/windows/)

the redeem step.

## Frequently asked questions

**Will my antivirus stop working if I turn off auto-renewal?**

No. Turning off auto-renewal only stops the automatic charge. Your protection continues
until the end of the current term, and you can renew manually with a license key
or a card at any time before or after that date.

**Can I get a refund for an antivirus auto-renewal charge in the US?**

Usually yes. Norton and McAfee both publish refund windows for annual auto-renewal
charges, typically 60 days from the charge date for US customers. Contact the vendor’s
support with the order number and ask for the auto-renewal refund.

**Does a renewal key add time to my existing subscription or replace it?**

A renewal key adds its term to your current expiry date. If you have 40 days left
and redeem a one-year key, you get one year plus 40 days. You do not lose the remaining
days.

**Why is a license key from a reseller cheaper than renewing on the vendor’s site?**

Vendors price the stored-card renewal at the full list price, while resellers compete
on the price of the key itself. The key activates the same software with the same
updates; only the purchase channel is different. Always check that the product name,
device count and region match your account.

**What happens if I let the subscription expire before I renew?**

The software keeps running but stops receiving virus definition updates, and real-
time protection is switched off after a grace period that varies by vendor. You
can still redeem a key afterwards, but you should do it quickly, and avoid the vendor’s
full-price reactivation offer if a key is cheaper.

Bottom line: auto-renewal is convenient, but it is the most expensive way to stay
protected. Note your date, turn the toggle off, and renew on your own terms with
a genuine key. Your computer stays protected, and the price stays under your control.
